In this four-part teleseminar course,
Shannon White, M.Div.,
journalist, and author of How Was School Today? Fine., interviews four of the nation’s
leading experts on adolescent issues about questions you may have about what’s
really
going on in the lives of your kids.
Dr. Joel Haber, an expert in the field of bullying, talks about
the “digital divide” between parents and adolescents that creates an open door for
cyber-bullying to occur:
“Kids, without really understanding the parameters of technology,
take risks that can be really problematic because they don’t understand the potential
consequences.”
Dr. Harris Stratyner, a national expert in the field of adolescent
addictions: “They model; they’re curious, they want to be sophisticated and want
to catch a buzz. They’re always looking for that thrill . . . that feeling that
they’re in an altered state of consciousness and they want to feel more relaxed and have
a social lubricant.”
Tom Mahoney is an expert in the field of adolescent and teen
sexuality. “In 2009, 46% of high school students had sexual intercourse . . . ” Mahoney
says, “It’s important for parents to be informed. It’s important for kids to have access
to information that is accurate and it’s important for kids to have a healthy sense
of who they are.”
Dr. Sharon Scully, is the former Director of Admissions at Columbia
University and now consults families in the college search process. Scully says,
“It’s become confusing even for parents who were well educated, because the whole admission
process is different from what it was when they went to school.”
